First of all, "Paranornal Activity", the newcomer Oren Peli, is the most interesting things I saw recently. And call it something because "Paranormal Activity" is more video than film, although it contains many more movies than Michael Bay movies together. Confused? I try to explain ...

The principle is simple and easy to summarize. The aspiring filmmaker Peli, take a digital camera, joins a group of friends and two aspiring actors and a film script of his own, at his home in a few days. With a simple story and aesthetics of a home video (which even allows you to disguise weaknesses in the photo), which has proved profitable in "The Blair Witch Project," Peli made a little film that became a business card / DVD that has come all more or less dark corridors of Hollywood until Steven Spielberg, who, fascinated, persuaded Paramount to buy the rights and finance the making of a new ending. From there it was a shot and Peli has become the Mecca of the new phenomenon of Cinema.

A couple, Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat, moves to a new home, and get to experience what we believe to be paranormal phenomena. The husband buys an HD camera to record what happens during the night while they sleep. What we are seeing is the result of those recordings. The concept is therefore the same as "Blair Witch Project", but here much better thought out and executed. I confess that, "Blair Witch Project", I'm more a fan of the shooting method used and the intelligence of the promotional campaign made in height than the film itself. And the reason is simple: Do not scare me. There was a novelty in the concept that rose above the effectiveness of the story that was told. Here, in "Paranormal Activity", the opposite happened. In fact, there was virtually no promotion campaign before the release of the film, except for some comments on the Internet who had access to that card. The statements of Mr. Spielberg, who claimed to be the scariest movie I have ever seen, unable to even see it at night, were only known after the premiere venue, and the buzz about the film was already deafening. What then is the secret of "Paranormal Activity"?

No. What Peli did was study very well the lesson of the master Alfred Hitchcock, especially one in which he explains the difference between suspense and surprise and which one the most effective. In "Paranomal Activity" before the viewer watches the protagonists of what happened during the night, and this information increases the anxiety that manifests itself in cardio-vascular events unfold in his eyes. There are scares, yes (I gave myself a couple of jumps in the chair), but the suggestion is that the film points to beat its predecessors. And the merit of Peli's all. Starting with the lack of interpretive qualities of the entire cast (great casting), which brings them closer to human beings and not fictional characters, from the accuracy of décors (we live right there and it shows), but mainly for the containment schizophrenic in the use of the camera. The fact that the camera is completely still at moments of suspense and anticipation gags and holds the viewer, making it an impotent voyeur before the impending tragedy.

Of course you need a predisposition to enter the game and let it handle. And that is precisely what is missing from most of the detractors of this fascinating subject. Who think, be deceived (in a good way) to the point of surrender into the hands of any one director and be your puppet masochist, being weak or a laughingstock, and is armed macho (or dike) not facilitating its absorption by the story, not only will enjoy the experience with dignity, as will ostracize and revile. But that makes this experience even more fascinating. The reasons for someone to make it easier to swallow for films like "Star Wars" or "Star Trek" than by a story that could happen in your own home (and this has to do with religious or spiritual beliefs only with the context) is a mystery to me, and it helped that "Paranormal Activity" had for me the sweet taste of fear, so long away from theaters.
Now we return to the cold beef. "Paranormal Activity" may not be a movie in the sense of the term. It may even be armed in a video film or a film disguised as a home movie, this is not important and that's why I call you something. But the competence with which Peli puts into practice the common but difficult task of telling a story in a credible and absorbing the essence of the film after all, makes it an irresistible subject, fascinating and frightening in today's cinematic landscape. This is why "Paranormal Activity" is the phenomenon of instant cult and Ori Peli's new big thing in Hollywood. Now, I hope that the similarities with "Blair Witch Project" wind up here, and Peli does not succumb to the size of the studios at the expense of your vein and film culture. "Area 51" (his new project, in post-production) is therefore awaited with much anxiety.
