It is certainly one of the films of the year. The reason is simple: Michael Mann. I could give a few more: Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, but it would be redundant, only the name of the director arrives. Mann has made some of the best thrillers of the last 20 years, and Public Enemies should not be less than that. The hunt moved to John Dillinger by the FBI in 1933 is more an excuse for engaging study of the two sides of the law and its protagonists, going to the bottom of men, individualizing them and re-insert them in a society that insists on decontextualized- them. That's what you expect from Michael Mann, is what is expected of Public Enemies.
